Healthiest High-Protein McDonald’s Orders for Staying on Track
Eating high protein doesn’t mean you have to completely avoid fast food.
Whether you’re traveling, heading home from the gym, working late, or simply need something quick, McDonald’s actually has several menu items that can fit into a higher-protein diet.
The key is knowing what to order.
McDonald’s recently highlighted that more than 30 of its U.S. menu items contain at least 15 grams of protein. That includes breakfast sandwiches, burgers, chicken and fish options.
If your goal is building muscle, losing body fat, or simply getting more protein throughout the day, here are some of the better choices.
1. Egg McMuffin
310 calories | 17g protein
The Egg McMuffin is one of the strongest breakfast choices at McDonald’s if you’re watching calories while trying to keep protein reasonably high.
It includes a freshly cracked egg, Canadian bacon and American cheese on an English muffin. McDonald’s currently lists the Egg McMuffin at 310 calories and 17 grams of protein. This is my Favorite option personally.
Why I like it
You get eggs, meat and cheese without the calorie load of some of the larger sausage, biscuit and McGriddles options.
Pair it with black coffee, water or a zero-calorie drink instead of automatically turning it into a full breakfast meal.
Best for: breakfast, calorie control and a quick protein-focused meal.
2. McDouble
390 calories | 22g protein
The McDouble might be one of the most underrated high-protein options on the entire menu.
It includes two beef patties and one slice of American cheese and currently comes in at 390 calories. McDonald’s lists it as providing 22 grams of protein.
That gives you a respectable amount of protein without needing to order one of the much larger burgers. A secret hack I do to cut even more carbs is I take the top bun off and only eat the bottom.
Make it more fitness-friendly
Order the McDouble by itself rather than automatically adding fries and a sugary drink.
You could also customize toppings based on your preferences, but remember that eliminating ketchup or other small toppings will make a much smaller difference than skipping a large order of fries or a regular soda.
Best for: lunch or dinner when you want solid protein for under 400 calories.
3. Three-Piece McCrispy Strips
400 calories | 30g protein
If your main goal is getting as much protein as possible without ordering a massive meal, the McCrispy Strips deserve a look.
McDonald’s says three McCrispy Strips provide 30 grams of protein, and the current three-piece serving contains 400 calories.
That’s one of the better protein totals available from a standard McDonald’s entrée.
The biggest thing to watch is the dipping sauce. Depending on your choice, sauces can quickly add additional calories. For example, McDonald’s Creamy Ranch contains 110 calories per serving.
Best for: higher-protein lunches or post-workout meals.
4. 10-Piece Chicken McNuggets
23g protein
Chicken McNuggets can actually work surprisingly well when you’re trying to prioritize protein.
According to McDonald’s, a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets order provides 23 grams of protein, and the nuggets are made with white meat chicken.
The mistake isn’t necessarily ordering the nuggets.
It’s turning them into a large combo with fries, regular soda and multiple high-calorie sauces.
If you want to keep the meal lighter, order the nuggets alone, choose water or a zero-calorie beverage and keep your dipping sauce reasonable.
For comparison, McDonald’s lists Honey Mustard at 60 calories while Creamy Ranch contains 110 calories per serving.
Best for: an easy high-protein fast-food option when you’re on the road.
5. Filet-O-Fish
16g protein
The Filet-O-Fish isn’t the highest-protein option on this list, but it gives you another alternative when you don’t want beef or chicken.
McDonald’s currently lists the sandwich at 16 grams of protein and uses wild-caught Alaskan Pollock in its U.S. Filet-O-Fish.
Because the sandwich includes breading, cheese and tartar sauce, I wouldn’t necessarily choose it strictly for maximum protein efficiency.
But it can still fit into a balanced diet when you’re craving fish.
Best for: variety when you want something other than beef or chicken.
The Best McDonald’s Order for High Protein and Lower Calories
When I'm trying to stay lean and maintain my six pack here's my go to:
Breakfast: Egg McMuffin + black coffee
Lunch: McDouble + water or zero-calorie drink
Higher-protein option: Three McCrispy Strips + water or zero-calorie drink
Quick snack/meal: Chicken McNuggets without fries
The bigger strategy is simple:
Prioritize the entrée and protein first.
A reasonably sized burger or chicken order can fit into your nutrition plan much more easily than the same entrée combined with large fries, regular soda, dessert and multiple sauces.
Don’t Let the Combo Meal Ruin the Order
This is where the calories can start to sneak up on you.
For example, McDonald’s lists the McCrispy sandwich itself at 470 calories. But a standard McCrispy meal with medium fries and a medium Sprite reaches approximately 1,040 calories.
The same idea applies throughout the menu.
You don’t necessarily have to avoid McDonald’s.
You just have to pay attention to everything surrounding your main entrée.
A simple approach is:
Protein entrée + zero-calorie beverage + skip or downsize the fries.
That can make a significant difference when you’re trying to maintain a calorie deficit.
Can You Eat McDonald’s While Losing Fat?
Absolutely!!!
Body-fat loss ultimately requires maintaining a calorie deficit over time.
Eating McDonald’s occasionally does not automatically stop your progress. What matters more is how the meal fits within your overall calorie intake, protein intake and eating habits.
Protein can also be especially useful when dieting because it supports muscle maintenance and tends to be more filling than meals built primarily around refined carbohydrates and fats.
That doesn’t make fast food nutritionally identical to meals built around lean meats, fruits, vegetables and other minimally processed foods.
Think of these McDonald’s options as convenient alternatives when you need them, not the foundation of your diet.
Final Takeaway
You don't need perfect nutrition every single day to make progress.
You need consistency.
If McDonald’s is your only convenient option, prioritize foods that give you a meaningful amount of protein for the calories you're eating.
The Egg McMuffin, McDouble, Chicken McNuggets and McCrispy Strips can all be worked into a higher-protein eating plan when ordered strategically.
Stay focused on the basics:
Hit your protein. Control your portions. Watch your drinks and sauces. Stay within your calories. Keep training.
That approach matters far more than trying to eat perfectly every time.
Nutrition information and menu availability can change and may vary by restaurant. Check the current McDonald’s nutrition information or app before ordering if you are tracking calories or macronutrients closely.
